Things I Learned at Innovate
Well, it’s Monday and I finally have the opportunity to reflect on last week’s visit to the Innovate Church Conference. Here are some things I learned, or was reminded of that I have forgotten…
–We have undersold the vision…haven’t communicated it clearly.
–We are desperately trying to reach people who don’t get it.
–Vision empowers people, when they see clearly…when they see truth.
–First Impressions are REALLY important.
–People ARE the ministry. Your participation is important.
–Kids area must leave the impression…”this church must love kids!”
–“Someone thinks I matter”…what you want guests to think once they’re on campus.
–We need to make women’s restroom facilities outstanding. Usually, women are sent as “advanced scouts” for their husbands.
–Four spaces of human interaction….public, social, personal, intimate spaces. People move from one to the other.
Public…anything more than 12ft. Distance that feels comforting.
Social…anything 4-13′
Personal…18”-4’
Intimate…anything less than 18” (touching)
–Be careful how we invite people to accept Jesus…he’s not a good luck charm that people pull out in times of trouble. He is IN our lives and we are IN His life.
–We should ask people to give their lives to Christ!
–We are standing today on the foundation we built yesterday….we will stand on today’s foundation, tomorrow.
–Church is not a one on one event…it’s a team sport!
–Church partners (members) should have a Velcro bond. Two pieces have a unity they apart cannot have.
–People need to be connected in groups and/or serving together.
–We need to figure out ways to show our people to serve the poor, needy, disadvantaged….disconnected.
–The church moving in unity will leave a mark for Christ.
–New series help people invest and invite.
–New series keep your core engaged.
–Study the culture…

–How can someone hear the “Big Idea” (the main point of a message) on Sunday morning, and then dig deeper into it in your small group during the week and not be able to “act” on it?
More information = Less Clarity
More information = Less Action
One Big Idea = More Clarity and Action
The Goal of the Big Idea: A community of transformation not information
–Planning – gives freedom to creativity
You can’t divide “creativity” and “teaching”…they must weave together.
–We’ve got to do a better job of making the message “stick”:
1. Is it simple?
2. Is it unexpected?
3. Is it concrete?
4. Is it story-driven?
5. Are you Spirit-dependent?
–Innovative ears limit what they listen to.
Listen to people if…
They believe in m
They love me
They have more wisdom than I do
–Innovative eyes focus on protecting the vision and produce the product and push the values.
–Innovative hands
Traditionally we use the hands for today.
Innovative hands are executing for tomorrow.
–We must have transformed feet
Traditional feet make the next step really big to prove we love God.
Innovative feet make the next step small to make sure people love God.
–Innovative Brain
Think that God blesses the PERSON…not the church.
Thanks to Guy Kawasaki, Mark Beeson, Tim Stevens, Dave Ferguson, Rob Wegner, Troy Gramling and Scott Hodge for these incredible insights!
