Standing in Line for iPhone?

So, Friday is the day a lot of us Mac geeks have been looking forward to…the day the NEW iPhone 3G goes on sale. As a matter of fact, it goes on sale precisely at 8am.

Apple promises the new “3G” iPhone will be much better. 3G technology gives iPhone fast access to the Internet and email over cellular networks around the world. iPhone 3G also makes it possible to do more in more places: Surf the web, download email, get directions, and watch video — even while you’re on a call. All things I need to be more productive in what I do, especially since I am on the go and have no real “office” other than what’s in my home…or at Starbucks!

The question remains…is it worth it to stand in line?

“iPhone 3G will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis, and sales will start at 8:00 a.m.,” Apple said in a statement. They went on to say, “arrive early to get in line as daily quantities are limited by stock on hand.”

Apple also has a quick guide for potential buyers about how their iPhone purchasing experience will play out…

“When you arrive, a concierge in an orange shirt will direct you to the iPhone bay where you can take advantage of our free personal setup,” Apple said. “A specialist will help you choose an iPhone 3G, review coverage maps, select a rate plan, and—best of all—have your new iPhone 3G ready to make calls, browse the Web and receive e-mail right on the spot.”

Apple is anticipating long lines and long wait times, as customers will receive one-on-one service from an Apple store employee to get their 3G iPhone up and running.

I sold my “original” iPhone a couple of weeks ago on eBay, for a rather handsome price…and have been holding onto the cash in my “formerly nicotine-stained fingers” (as Rush would say) since then in order to go pick up the new iPhone this Friday.

A pastor friend of mine and techno-geek himself, David Crawford, and I are planning on going extremely early to get coffee and a box of donuts, take our lawn chairs and head to the Apple Store in The Mall at Green Hills to take our place in line. How early? That will be a day before decision.

So, are you getting a new iPhone? Are you going to be there Friday morning to stand in line for one? Love to hear from ya!

  1. I will see you guys in line. I will be camping out!

  2. Im bringing the whole family with me. i will also be in line for hours. We will make the best of it.

  3. Dude, you’re so addicted! I’ll bet you’ll be in line at least by 4:30 am.

  4. All I know for sure is IF Krispy Kreme is open at 4am, then Joe will grab some donuts to go and book it to the mall. INSANE I tell you. But the fact there’s “CASH” saved for this and I won’t notice any decrease in the checking account – BUY ON sweetheart – buy on.

  5. I continue to be amazed how the Apple brand continues to make us “mac” people feel like little kids on Christmas morning. Yes, the products are great, and for me I make my living with them, but it’s more than that.

It’s the total experience, the store, the employees, and THE BOXES. Steve J has mastered the art of anticipation. The way the accessories are packed and stored, that “apple” smell….you get my drift.

So to answer your question, YES I will be there with bells on. I know you remember this Joe but I was 3rd in line on the original i-day (let’s see..as I recall, I waited for 14 hours, you strolled up with sbux in hand (of course) pealed out a wad of cash, much to Pams surprise (who also had sbux in hand, of course) and less than an hour later yours truly walked out of the Apple store with 2 iphones in hand, one for me & one for you.

Although I doubt round 2 will top round 1 (it’s never as good as the first time) I think the excitement will be in the air and for me, lesson learned…I’m sending my son and his buddies to camp out and like my buddy Joe, stroll in when the time is right and once again be another happy Apple customer.

    See you out there!!!

  6. Devin…you know I would do it for you this time! But you had so much fun out there last time that, well, I didn’t want to spoil it for you!!

My Wife and I will be in line. We have an Apple Store in Charlotte, but will go to an at&t store because we need to add a line to a family plan and deal with stuff I don’t think Apple will be able to do. We are looking forward to the time together. We are getting there at 7am and going to make the best of it :)
